Can you imagine a world without light?
For us, any lack of light is normally a temporary frustration. However, for the 1.6 billion people who do not have access to electrical lighting, a dimly lit world is a dark and permanent reality. In India alone, between 150 and 300 million people rely on the faint, smoky and unhealthy glow of a simple kerosene lamp to provide light after dark.

Expenditure on fuel based lighting can vary from anywhere between $1 and $12 per month(1). A simple kerosene lamp provides less than 10 lumens of light and the naked flame emits noxious fumes, leading to respiratory illnesses, accidental fires and burns. Ignite's white LED light will retail for $30 or less; with no naked flame, no smoke and no CO2 and three times the light of a simple kerosene lamp, our product offers a safe and affordable replacement for kerosene.

However, IGNITE is more than just light, and more than new products; we're also about engaging the power of the private sector for sustainable social change. Solar powered LED lighting is just one example of a "base of the pyramid" market opportunity that can unlock social and economic value in the developing world. Through the IGNITE Foundation we will research new 'empowering' products and new distribution channels so we can better understand the needs of our customers and how to reach them.
